This version is for old Macs with 680x0 processors; it is packaged with an old version of Stuffit so that it can be unpacked with Stuffit Expander 4 under System 7.0. Get this version if you want to run BarFly under a Mac emulator on a PC, or if you use a Mac II, Quadra, Centris or LC etc. It does almost everything that the Classic version does, the only limitation being that it can only export pictures of the music in PICT format.

This version is for use almost everywhere, but is not quite as up to date as the Carbon version Runs native on 680x0 Macs under systems 7.0-8.1. Runs native on PowerMacs under systems 7.6-9.2, and in the Classic layer of OS X.

BarFly Classic
Use this version for OS X, or for OS 8.5 - 9.2 It will run native under any version of OS X, and also under Classic systems 8.5 or later provided that Carbonlib is installed. It has a better editor than the Classic version and can write files with line ends in Mac, PC or Unix format. It is now supplied both as a Zip file and as a Stuffit file. Apple no longer include Stuffit Expander in recent versions of OS X, while the Zip format is supported natively; however, older versions of Stuffit Expander won't open the Zip file correctly. If you are using OS X 10.3 or later download the .zip file; if you are using OS 9 or an older version of OS X download the .sit file. The contents of the two archives are identical.

The default set of sounds you get with Quicktime is a bit short on free-reed instruments,
and in particular there is no concertina sound. This is a very high quality Sound Font in
SF2 format, made from my own baritone Wheatstone English concertina (ca. 1906). It has
been compressed with Stuffit, which is not very efficient, as the dedicated packaging programs
(SFArk and SFPack) don't yet have Macintosh versions available. Consequently it's a very
big file - 7.3 Mb in size. You must be using at least version 5 of Quicktime to use it.
To use this file under OS X, unpack it and place the resulting "Concertina.sf2" file in
~/Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks
To use it under Classic systems, place it in System Folder:Extensions:Quicktime Extensions
If you want to use it under both operating systems you can put the file in the OS X location,
reboot in OS 9, make an alias of the file and put that in the Quicktime Extensions folder.
You don't have to reboot, or even re-start BarFly. Choose "Add an Instrument" from the Instrument
sub-menu. In the Instrument Picker dialog, the Synthesiser popup menu now contains a new synth
named "Wheatstone English Concertina". Choose that, then choose one of the three instruments
from the Instrument popup.

This is a quick and dirty Mac port of James Allwright's yaps program which converts abc
files to postscript. Currently it only works on Power Macintoshes.
